Generation Brexit

Decaying Shed

This drawing was made whilst on an artist residency at Dumfries House, Scotland, in 2015, exactly one year before the Brexit referendum. Dumfries House is a beautiful estate with an 18th-Century house and gardens, surrounded by farmland. Roaming the estate grounds made me feel like I had travelled back in time. I found this decaying little shed on the grounds and decided to draw it. For me this shed symbolises Brexit as it has been abandoned in the process of the upkeep of the rest of the estate grounds. In its effort to withdraw from the European Union, the United Kingdom has focused on an archaic and traditional ideal of Great Britain, and in doing so has neglected the effects that this might realistically have for its citizens - especially minorities and working classes - many of whom will feel left behind, just like this shed.
