I've found that telling potential suitors that my interest in sustainable fisheries was a reason for voting Leave is more of a turn-off than the Leave vote itself. And that's quite understandable – fish aren't the sexiest of topics.  My (of course incredibly active) love life since the referendum hasn't been consumed too much by referendum rematches. As it happens, I've only dated Remainers. The key to making it work is being open-minded and enjoying a bit of friendly debate – though I do...

From the Financial Times today: "The owner of pizzeria chain Franco Manca warned that the Brexit vote had started to affect the availability of European restaurant staff in the UK, potentially pushing up wages for new hires .".  If fewer EU workers in the UK means higher, fairer, wages for workers, should we really fight against this? Especially in the context of the real wage stagnation/depression that we're seeing. It's ordinary young people in particular who fill these type of...

Right now, the EU is planning to spend €6 million a year on a swanky new 'House of Europe' in the centre of Paris – plus €12 million making the place more plush for EU officials. Jean Arthuis, a French liberal MEP has said that this "won’t solve the issue of how we get citizens closer to the EU.” Of course it won't - it'll end up being a cocktail club for eurocrats.  How can the EU justify this when there are millions living in poverty in Greece thanks in part to the EU pushing an...

It's good that the UK Government have moved to assure EU citizens they'll be able to stay and gain citizenship after Brexit – but these people need to have confidence in the Home Office's ability to carry the process out. Who could blame them for lacking confidence with reports of the Home Office's inability to enforce EU rules allowing deportation of foreign criminals, and the already huge backlog of 100,000 citizenship cases? The Home Office is a laughing stock.  If it can't cope now,...

Article 50 references an exit 'agreement'. If there was a clear legal checklist of the UK's financial obligations to the EU, as the EU negotiating team seem to suggest, there would be no need for this agreement. Therefore, the two sides should stop legalistic grandstanding and work out how much should be paid for mutual benefit – it's in the UK's interest to pay some money to set a friendly tone for hashing out of a trade deal and continue to benefit from joint projects, and in the EU's...

The UK will never be able to negotiate successfully with the EU if we can't stop petty fighting amongst ourselves. Of course there will be, and should be, debate about the form we want Brexit to take – but damaging rhetoric which is a continuation of the referendum campaign needs to stop. I still see Leave voters smeared as uneducated racists who love England but can barely speak English, and people who don't sign up fully to the Government's vision dismissed as 'remoaners'. Brexit is...
